The Washington & Old Dominion TrailMile 10 thru 20 |
At mile 8.5 the W&OD crosses over the D.C. Beltway just north of the I-66 interchange and enters the Dunn Loring and Vienna area, just a few blocks south of Tysons Corner. The main problem in this area, as is the case in Falls Church, are the number of road crossings. At the Route 123 crossing in downtown Vienna are several restaurants, so this may be a good place to take a break.
Once you pass Vienna, you enter a very nice three mile section. There are few buildings and no crossings, so enjoy it while you can. At mile 15, there is a very bad crossing at Hunter Mill Road. USE CAUTION as sight distances are very short. Hunter Mill Road also marks the trail's entrance into the Reston area. Once you pass under the Toll Road at mile 16, there are several real nasty intersections for the next couple of miles. There are fast food restaurants at Wiehle avenue (mile 17) and there is also a 7-Eleven right next to the trail at mile 18. A quarter mile past the 7-Eleven, just after the new Reston Parkway underpass, is Reston Town Center on your right. Here, you will find a bike shop and several nice restaurants (some with sidewalk seating). The next two miles are fairly nice. The Fairfax County Parkway trail intersects at mile 19. The W&OD enters downtown Herndon at mile 20. The Eldon Street crossing here is particularly bad. Past Herndon, there are numerous residential street crossing, so your pace is once again restricted.
